A man was meant to be doubtful about himself, but undoubting about the truth; this has been exactly reversed. – G.K. Chesterton
Throughout my life, there have been moments where I truly question God’s love for me, His ultimate purpose for my life, and honestly if He is always good like the Bible says… In these moments God has always reminded my heart of how good He really is & this verse is one that I consistently bring my mind back to. This verse is an amazing and simple reminder that God’s very nature is good, pure, holy, loving and perfect.
With God’s essential nature being light and no darkness being in Him at all is something we should always focus on. This essential nature means that everything He allows to happen in our life comes with a greater purpose. This essential nature means that there can be nothing bad that comes from God and nothing that He can’t use to redeem. When we can truly grasp this reality of our savior and how good He ALWAYS is it can radically change our perspective on everything in our lives.
Outside of references in scripture, we can see the powerful and positive impact of “light” throughout our daily lives. It enables us to get work done, is a major factor of growing healthy crops, reveals how beautiful things are, provides safety, and helps see potential hazards. When it comes to the scriptures light is always representing things that are good, pure, true, holy, reliable and faithful. Light is a revealer and it shines brightly. Whereas, darkness always represents what is sinful, evil and bad.
God is completely untainted by sin and evil. That’s why “God is light” represents the true perfection of God and the truth that He alone can guide us out of dark places in our lives, especially in areas of secret sin. “Let there be light” recorded in Genesis reveals God’s expression of His nature and His will for the world. Jesus made a declaration that He is the “light of the world” in John. Paul expresses in 1 Timothy that God, “lives in light so brilliant that no human can approach him. No human eye has ever seen him, nor ever will.”
So you can see that this light signifies Jesus’ moral excellence and purity forever. He has always been the light and He will always be the light. Which makes it essential for us to always turn to Him in times of trouble and allow Him to speak into our hearts.
The part that usually causes many people to shy away from the light is the uncomfortable process of the secret areas of our lives. When Holy Spirit comes into our lives He starts to shine a light in areas in our life that we need to work on. In the dark, we can hide the ugly areas of our life and continue on like everything is great. Whereas in the light we are forced to see the ugly and there is nowhere to truly hide it. This is a good thing as believers because we are always in the process of being changed into being more like Christ every single day. Whatever you are struggling with today, bring it into the light and allow God to work on it. Day by day the sin that use to easily entangle you will get further and further behind you with the help of the Holy Spirit and a choosing to be obedient.
